Nursing Entrance Examinations

The focus of nursing is health promotion, maintenance, curative, restorative, supportive and terminal care to individuals and groups of all ages, taking into consideration the factors that influence them in the total environment.


Nursing is a discipline focused on assisting individuals, families and communities in attaining, re-attaining and maintaining optimal health and functioning. Modern definitions of nursing define it as a science and an art that focuses on quality of life as defined by persons and families. Nursing is not only concerned about health and functioning but with quality of living and dying, lived experience, and universal lived experiences of health. Nursing is an applied science which has a unique body of knowledge that utilizes principles from the physical, biological, and behavioral sciences. After passing the SLC examination, nursing comes as one of the most attractive subject for studies among the girls. For many girls, nursing is the first choice and they want to shape their career in technical field. Since last few years, nursing has become one of the most popular professions. However, the profession was not held in high regards in Nepali society till a few years ago. But now, not only the students but even the parents are quite keen to make their daughters nurses. The increasing demand of nurses in the health sector all over the world has also promoted the nursing profession. Not only in Nepal, they have good and alluring job opportunities abroad as well. This is the reason many Nepali nurses have now reached Europe, America, Germany, Australia and other countries. Especially Britain has become a very prospective destination for nurses. In terms of the service they offer, Nepali nurses are no way behind foreigners. The fact that Nepali nurses have a wide acceptance abroad speaks for this fact. It has become a globally recognized profession and its demand is increasing day by day.

In Nepal , nursing education can be done from different Universities like Tribhuwan University (TU), Kathmandu University (KU), B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Science, Purvanchal University and Center for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT). National Academy of Medical Sciences also has nursing courses. There are altogether six nursing campuses under TU and they are: Maharajgunj Nursing campus, Lalitpur Nursing Campus, Biratnagar Nursing Campus, Birgunj Nursing Campus, Pokhara Nursing Campus and Nepalgunj Nursing Campus. There are 30 nursing campuses under CTEVT whereas Kathmandu University and B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences have their own individual Nursing Campuses.

Nowadays, in order to cater to the need of aspiring nursing students, many institutes have cropped up promising to provide basic foundational guide. They conduct Nursing Entrance preparation classes; take 2-3 months classes and charge about Rs. 4000 to 6000 per course.

Admission Eligibility and Selection Criteria

1. Tribhuvan University
a. Proficiency Certificate Level (PCL):
Duration of Course: Three years course.
Intake Month: Admission for new intake will be advertised by Tribhuvan University, Institute of Medicine (TU, IOM), Dean's Office, Maharajgunj, Kathmandu yearly in December/January (Nepali Month – Mangshir/Poush) in National Newspaper.

Eligibility for Admission:The students must have at least 50% marks in School Leaving Certificate with English, Math and Science compulsory subjects and

Selection Criteria: Applicants have to pass a rigorous national entrance examination conducted by TU, IOM.

The classes for successful candidates will begin in March (Nepali Month – Chaitra).

b. Post Basic Bachelor in Nursing (BN):
Duration of Course: Two years course.
Intake Month:The advertisement for new intake of BN will be published by TU, IOM in August/September (Nepali Month – Shrawan/Bhadra). The interested applicants have to collect application forms directly from TU, IOM, Dean's Office and have to submit in the same place. While submitting the application form, the applicant has to choose the respective campus to study as well as the major subject to study in.
Eligibility for Admission:To be eligible for the BN application form fill-up, the applicant must have completed PCL in Nursing and have not less than a minimum of three years of work experience.

Selection Criteria: The applicants have to go through the entrance exam.

The classes for successful candidates will begin in November (Nepali Month – Mangshir).

2. Kathmandu University

B.Sc. Nursing 
Duration of the course: 4 years.
Intake Month: June/July
Eligibility for Admission:
To be eligible for selection to the Basic B.Sc. Nursing course, a candidate should have: completed 17 years of age on or before the date of commencement of course. Completed Intermediate of Science or 10+2 or equivalent with English, Mathematics, and Science (Chemistry, Physics, Biology) and should have secured an aggregate of 50% or more marks in English, Mathematics and any two of the science subjects mentioned above.

Selection Criteria: 
•    Kathmandu University Entrance Examination. Entrance exam at KU consists of 30 questions (Science), 30(English), 20(Maths), 20(Health/GK)
•    Academic achievement in the Intermediate of Science or 10+2 or Equivalent examination
•    Personal Interview
•    Candidates will be selected on the basis of merit by the school of Medical Sciences.

3. BPKHIS

In BPKIHS, there are 40 seats; however there is a quota system as well. There is free competition for 16 seats, 2 seats for hilly people and 1 for the children of employee of BPKIHS, 5 seats for foreign students..

B.Sc. Nursing
Duration of the course: 4 years
Intake Month: June/July
Eligibility for Admission:
Completed 17 years of age on or before the date of commencement of course. Completed Intermediate of Science or 10+2 or equivalent with English, Mathematics, and Science (Chemistry, Physics, Biology) and should have secured an aggregate of 50% or more marks in English, Mathematics and any two of the science subjects mentioned above.

Selection Criteria: The applicants have to go through the entrance exam.  Entrance exam consists of 35 questions (Science), 20(Maths), 50(English) and 25(General KnowledgeK) with 100 total.


4. Center for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT)

a. Proficiency Certificate Level (PCL):
Duration of the course: 3-year
Intake Month: August/September
Eligibility for Admission: To fulfill the entry level requirement for admission, candidates must have passed the school leaving certificate (SLC) with second division in aggregate,

Selection Criteria:  Candidates must pass the entrance examination and the selection will be based on the merit list in the descending order.A three hours entrance examination will be held for one comprehensive paper (50 marks each for English, Math and Science). The questions will be of multiple choices.

5. Purbanchal University

B. Sc. Nursing
Duration of the course: Four year program
Intake Month:
Eligibility for Admission: Candidate must have completed intermediate sciences or 10+2 or equivalent with biology, chemistry, physics, math and English as main subjects and should have secured minimum of 50% of marks in aggregate and must have completed 17 years age.

Selection Criteria: The applicants have to go through the entrance exam. Applicants must pass the Entrance Examination conducted by Purvanchal University with at least 50% marks.
